About
The Tree of Hippocrates is a magnificent oriental plane tree standing proudly in the heart of Kos Town, on the Square of the Platane. With a crown that spreads over 12 m (39 ft), the tree is a living testament to the island’s medical heritage, said to be a descendant of the original tree that Hippocrates himself used to teach his pupils. Today, it sits beside the historic Castle of Knights and the Gazi Hassan Mosque, offering visitors a tranquil and accessible spot to reflect on ancient medicine while enjoying the scenic surroundings. The tree’s hollow trunk, supported by metal scaffolding, and the Arabic‑inscribed white tap that adorn its base add a touch of cultural intrigue to this free public landmark.
