The Cave of Antiparos
About
The Cave of Antiparos is a spectacular underground wonder located on the small Cycladic island of Antiparos in Greece. The cavern extends several levels deep, and its walls are adorned with breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. The cave has long been a place of natural fascination as well as a cultural site; historic inscriptions left by the Greek poet Archilochus, the famed writer Lord Byron, and even a plaque honoring King Otto of Greece can be found scattered throughout the chambers. Modern renovations—funded by the European Union—have added steps, lighting, security cameras, and loudspeakers to help guide and protect visitors while preserving the cavern’s natural beauty. Visitors to the cave typically enjoy a guided tour that takes them through the various levels, giving insights into both the geological history of the island and its role during the German occupation of the 1940s.
