Kouroi of Flerio
About
The Kouroi of Flerio are two remarkable 5‑metre‑tall, unfinished marble statues that illustrate the craftsmanship of Archaic Greece. One stands in the shaded garden of the village of Melanes on Naxos, while the other is half‑buried in a rocky quarry near the same village. Discovered in the late 20th century, both kouroi are notable for their raw, unfinished surfaces and the visible damage caused by transport – breaking feet and missing limbs – which give visitors an intimate glimpse into the stone‑cutting process of the era. Together they form a living piece of archaeology, allowing tourists to experience the raw beauty of Greek antiquity outside the confines of a museum.
