Acheron River
About
The Acheron is a 52‑km (32‑mile) river that rises in the Ioannina regional unit of Epirus, northwest Greece, and flows westward into the Ionian Sea near the town of Parga. Its course winds through pastoral valleys, offering serene scenery for hikers and nature lovers before emptying at the coastal village of Ammoudia. Historically the Acheron has captured imaginations as the "river of woe" that, according to Greek mythology, marks the boundary of Hades. Legends speak of Charon the ferryman bringing souls across its waters, while the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion—a temple of the dead—anchor the mythic aura of the landscape. Today the river attracts visitors who enjoy a blend of natural beauty, unspoiled trails, and a tangible link to ancient Greek legends.
