Marathonisi
About
Marathonisi, also called Turtle Island, is a small uninhabited islet off the southern coast of Zakynthos in western Greece. Part of the Zakynthos National Marine Park and protected under the Natura 2000 network, it serves as a vital nesting and breeding ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The island’s crescent‑shaped beach, accessible by boat, becomes a quiet haven for turtles during nesting season, while its limestone sea caves to the south offer excellent snorkeling opportunities. Visitors usually reach Marathonisi by taking a tour or glass‑bottom boat from Laganas, and although the northern beach is largely cordoned off for conservation, a small portion allows sunbathing and swimming. With its unspoiled natural scenery and wildlife‑watching opportunities, Marathonisi is a must‑visit for nature lovers and marine‑conservation enthusiasts.
