Central Market Hall
About
The Central Market Hall – also known as the Great Market Hall – is Budapest’s iconic indoor auction market, situated on the pedestrian‑friendly Váci utca close to the Liberty Bridge. Built in 1897 by architect Samu Pecz, its Neo‑Gothic façade and soaring glass roof create a striking visual ex. Inside the three levels, visitors are greeted by lively stalls of fresh produce, aromatic spices, artisanal cheeses and a gourmet court where locals and tourists alike can sample Hungary’s signature dishes, from hearty goulash to paprika‑spiced meats. In 2013 CNN Travel named it the most beautiful market in Europe, underscoring its status as one of Budapest’s top attractions. Every May the market turns into a bustling hub during the Love Your Local Market campaign, featuring special promotions, cooking workshops and cultural performances that celebrate local commerce. For groups, a curated six‑station tasting tour is offered, giving a comprehensive taste of Hungarian cuisine. The market opens daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. – with Saturday closing at 4:00 p.m. – and remains free to enter. It is ideal for families, food lovers, history enthusiasts and solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in the vibrancy of Budapest’s interior market scene.
