Royal Palace of Godollo
About
The Royal Palace of Gödöllő, also known as Grassalkovich Castle, is Hungary’s largest Baroque palace and a living testament to the country’s imperial past. Built in the 1730s by Count Antal Grassalkovich I, the palace grew into a magnificent double‑U shape with eight wings, a theatre, a riding hall, an orangery and extensive gardens, eventually becoming Queen Elisabeth (Sisi)’s favourite residence in the late 19th century. Today the palace functions as a museum that showcases lavish interiors, the Hungarian royal collection, and rotating exhibitions, while the 26‑hectare English‑style park surrounds the complex with walking paths, seasonal flower displays and a tranquil atmosphere. The site has undergone extensive restoration and will soon be part of a nationwide rehabilitation program that will modernise facilities, introduce new event spaces and enhance visitor services, ensuring the palace remains a vibrant cultural hub for generations to come.
