About

The Deak Restaurant is the sites and mellowed building of the Deak square in Sopron, the longest one in Middle Europe. The building which is found at the corner of the Deak square and the Elisabeth street was built by the famous architect Antal Ullein in 1891. At the beginning it functioned as a restaurant, later it became the Lobl dancehouse and finally it became an Italian coffee house. The name of the square was „ the 1 of Mai” from 1947 until the breakthrough. During this time the restaurant became gradually a phenomena under the name „ Deak”. Sopron people were gathering here, young lovers found each other while the elder generation kept good memories at this place. The name of the square and restaurant was given after Ferenc Deak (1803-1867), who was called „The wise Hungarian”. The owners insisted on tradition and renovated the restaurant and the popular garden. Deak is caracterised by quality, the meeting point of old and new, comfort and reform of the kitchen. By the renovation and placing the statue of Ferenc Deak on the building, the owners intented to pay a tribute to the memory of the great patriot. In 2011, the restaurant was honoured with the grand prize of the KerTrend competition of open-air restaurants, and it was awarded with the Quality Prize of the Hungarian Tourism LTD in 2014.
