The Colony Tour is Achill's Number 1 Walking Tour. The Tour is a gentle two hour walk around the historic ruins of the 19th Century Protestant Achill Mission with BAFTA-winning writer and Achill islander Kevin Toolis. Learn about the fascinating rise and fall of the Irish Prophet Edward Nangle who in the Year of Our Lord 1831 came to Achill to save the heathen native Irish from the errors of Popery - and ignite a bitter religious war for the entire destiny of the Irish nation with his arch rival His Grace Archbishop of Tuam Dr John MacHale. A war fought out in Bibles, guns, boycotts, famine and starvation as the devastating Great Famine of 1847 raged and hundreds of desperate islanders took the soup to survive. Tours run Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
