The Patrick Kavanagh Centre celebrates the life and work of Inniskeen’s most famous son, the poet and writer Patrick Kavanagh. Housed in a refurbished old church the centre is an award winning visitor experience telling the story of Kavanaghs journey from farmer in Inniskeen who dabbled in poetry to national icon. Visitors can take a self guided tour of the experience which is immersive and evocative with content rich displays a short film and Kavanaghs most famous poems recited on audio loop. Patrick is buried in the adjoining graveyard in a beautifully laid out plot which adds considerably to an appreciation of his story. With a strong evocation of the natural world and landscape of Monaghan, visitors can then enjoy a walk around the Kavanagh Trail which takes in the quaint farming village of Inniskeen and key locations in the Kavanagh story. Much of the landscape and buildings remain unchanged from kavanaghs own lifetime in the early and mid 20th Century.
