Pieve di Santa Maria

Viguzzolo has a beautiful little romanic church named Pieve, consecrated to Santa Maria, which was built in about the first half of the eleventh century. This simple romanic basilica, oriented from west to east, is divided into three naves, that end with semicircular apses and the typical covering of churches with monocuspidate and lateral spur. Unfortunately the only remaining trace of the fresco is on the central apse, probably painted in the eleventh century, too. It shows only two feet and the clothing: possibly a Pantocratic Christ Person between two saints: S. Cosma and S. Damiano. The crypt extends under the larger apse to the middle of the nave; it was completely built with bricks, and is divided into three naves and two side aisles, four spans of different breadth and cross vaults, ending in a single apse. Inside the church we can also find two precious elements: a wooden Crucifix and a “Cappuccina” Tomb.
