Santuario e Basilica di Bonaria
About
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonaria (Santuario N.S. di Bonaria) is a spiritual beacon perched on the hill of Bonaria in Cagliari, Sardinia. It houses the miraculous Simulacro of the Madonna and Child that, according to legend, arrived in a wooden chest from the sea on 25 March 1370. The sanctuary is part of the Mercedarian Order, whose convent, basilica, and museum occupy a sprawling complex that blends Gothic-Catalan architecture with centuries of devotional art. Visitors wander from the nave to the ornate altar where the Simulacro is venerated, explore the atmospheric Museum of Faith, and rest in the serene courtyard overlooking the Adriatic. With daily Mass and an array of religious commemorations, the site offers a unique blend of religious history, art, and natural beauty. A typical visit lasts about two hours, giving ample time to admire the interior chapels, the marble atrium, and the scenic gardens. The sanctuary is open daily, with more extended hours on weekends and public holidays (6:30‑12:30 and 16:00‑20:00). On weekdays visitors can enter from 6:30‑11:45 and 16:00‑18:30. The experience is free of charge, making it an accessible pilgrimage destination for all travelers.
