About

Villa Jovis is a stunning testament to Roman imperial grandeur perched on the northeastern tip of the island of Capri. Constructed in 27 AD by Emperor Tiberius and completed in 37 AD, the villa once served as a luxurious retreat and administrative center for the emperor. The sprawling complex spreads over 7 000 m² (75 000 ft²) across a series of terraces that rise steeply from the base of Mount Tiberio, creating an impressive 40‑meter (130‑foot) elevation drop. Roman engineers curated an intricate water‑collection system—an ornate cistern and a rain‑water harvesting network—to sustain the villa’s lavish apartments and open‑walled reception halls. A walk of roughly two kilometres (one mile) from the town of Capri to the villa’s secluded summit offers both a moderate hike and panoramic vistas of the Sorrentine Peninsula and the blue waters below. Though the walls are in ruins, the site’s structural remnants—North, South, East, and West wings—paint a vivid picture of the emperor’s domestic life, complete with reception halls, living quarters, and a watch‑tower for rapid communication to the mainland. Today, the ruins are open to public access, allowing visitors to wander through the ruins at their leisure, photograph the elegant balustrades, and imagine life in ancient Rome. The site is best explored in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday crowds and to catch the golden light over the terraces.
