Venezia Nuova
About
Venezia Nuova is a historic district in the heart of Livorno, created during the 17th‑century urban expansion orchestrated by the Medici family. The area sits on land reclaimed from the sea, connected to the rest of the city by a network of canals and charming bridges that echo the maritime heritage of Livorno. The district is lined with elegant palazzi, many of which now host civic institutions, museums, and firms, as well as architecturally significant churches such as Santa Caterina da Siena. Visitors can stroll through narrow lanes, admire the Baroque facades, and experience the lively atmosphere of the New Fish Market (Pescheria Nuova), which came into being in 1705. The district offers a living snapshot of Livorno’s cosmopolitan past and remains a lively, pedestrian-friendly enclave where history and everyday life intertwine.
