The Rupestrian Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve is a unique medieval monument carved into the rocky outcrop of Matera’s iconic Sassi. Dating from the 8th century, it was the first female monastic center of the Benedictine Order in the city, and its continued use as a place of worship—particularly during the feast of St. Lucia on December 13—underscores its spiritual significance.
