Battistero degli Ariani
About
The Baptistery of the Arians is one of the eight UNESCO‑listed heritage sites in Ravenna, a testament to the city’s golden age of mosaics. Originally commissioned by the Ostrogothic king Theodoric in the late 5th century, the baptistery evolved through centuries of religious change, eventually becoming a dedication to the Virgin Mary. Its most striking feature is the vaulted dome, adorned with exquisite golden mosaics that depict the baptism of Christ and the surrounding Apostles. Visitors wander through the narrow ambulatory, experience the intricate floor tiles, and marvel at one of the finest examples of early Christian art. The baptistery’s close proximity to the Basilica dei Cappuccini and the historic city center makes it a must‑visit attraction for history buffs and art lovers alike. The site is open daily with two sessions on most days: a morning slot from 9:00 to 12:00 and a late afternoon slot from 2:00 to 5:00 on weekdays and weekends. During the peak season, it remains open a few hours earlier up to March 28, 2026. Entry is €2 for adults, with free admission on selected dates such as the first Sunday of each month, July 23, August 30, and a special “Night of Gold” on an October Saturday scheduled by the foundation. Guided tours can be arranged by contacting the booking center at 320‑953‑9916 or via email. Duration of visit: about 90 minutes, enough time to appreciate the mosaics, learn about its layered history, and reflect on Ravenna’s contribution to the early Christian world.
