About

Pentedattilo is a haunting ghost town perched on Monte Calvario in Calabria’s southern region. Founded in 640 BC as a Greek colony from Chalcis, the village once flourished before facing earthquakes, invasions, and a devastating storm in 1783. It remained abandoned from the mid‑1960s until the 1980s, when volunteers from across Europe returned to restore and repopulate its deserted streets. Today, Pentedattilo offers visitors a glimpse into the area’s rich history with evocative ruins and panoramic views overlooking the Strait of Messina. Each year the town hosts a film festival, attracting filmmakers and cinema lovers to experience the unique backdrop of this deserted village.
