Tombe della Via Latina - Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica
About
In the middle of the Roman suburbs, between the modern Via Appia and Via Tuscolana, a perfectly preserved section of the third mile of the ancient Via Latina is set. Definitively traced by the Romans around the 4th-3rd century BC, it connected Rome to Capua crossing the Lepini, Ausoni, Aurunci mountains and the valleys of the Sacco and Liri rivers, maintaining its importance throughout antiquity. Even in the Middle Ages, in fact, it was preferred as a road network for Naples due to its better conservation compared to the Appian Way and the presence of a series of Christian religious buildings along the route. Entering the Archaeological Park of the Tombs of the Via Latina it is now possible to walk along a stretch of the original pavement of the road. With a pleasant walk you can admire the rich tombs dating back to the 1st-2nd century AD. that overlooked the path, which still have perfectly preserved polychrome decorations on the facades and inside.
