Roccia dell'Elefante
About
The Elephant Rock, locally known as Roccia dell’Elefante, is a striking trachyte outcrop situated near Castelsardo on the island of Sardinia. Rising to about 4 m (13 ft) high, its weather‑eaten form bears a resemblance to a giant elephant, earning it its name. The site doubles as an archaeological treasure: a pair of pre‑Nuragic domus de janas, ancient underground tombs, are carved into the rock’s interior, and in July 2025 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the “Funerary Tradition in the Prehistory of Sardinia.” Visitors can wander the boulder freely, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Mediterranean landscape. The area’s mild climate is best experienced from late spring through early autumn, when the sea breezes are comfortable for hiking and photography.
