About
The Chiesa Matrice, formally known as Chiesa Madre di Erice, is the main Roman Catholic church and a shining emblem of Sicilian Gothic architecture. Constructed in the early 14th century under King Frederick III of Aragon, the church has undergone significant additions and a Neo‑Gothic restoration in the 19th century, adding a grand bell tower and intricate façades that combine Chiaramontan Gothic elements with later styles. Inside, a modest museum in the former sacristy displays treasured silverware, chalices, and textiles from the 15th to 18th centuries, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s ecclesiastical heritage.
