About
The Giardini Botanici dell'Isola Madre is a historic 8‑hectare botanical oasis on the island of Isola Madre in Lake Maggiore. Designed in the eighteenth century by Count Vitaliano Borromeo, the gardens spread across seven terraced levels that showcase an impressive range of ornamental plants—from camellias and cypresses to rhododendrons and ancient palms—alongside aviary enclosures that host parrots, peacocks and other birds. Key spots include the Loggia del Cashmir, the family chapel, the palm avenue and the terraced gardens, all offering panoramic lake views. Open daily during warmer months, the site charges a modest admission fee and serves as a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and families alike.
