Cattedrale di Sant'Evasio (Duomo di Casale Monferrato)
About
The Casale Monferrato Cathedral, also known as Duomo di Casale Monferrato or Cattedrale di Sant'Evasio, stands in the historic center of Casale Monferrato in Piedmont, Italy. Consecrated in the early 12th century, it showcases a harmonious blend of Romanesque foundations and Gothic verticality. Inside, five naves are illuminated by frescoed ceilings, with the central nave supported by tall polychrome columns. Significant religious art adorns the space, including an 18th‑century marble statue of the Ecstasy of Mary Magdalen by Giovanni Battista Bernero, a bronze column bearing the sign of Christ where Saint Evasius is said to have been martyred, and an 11th‑century crucifix in the apse. The south transept opens onto the Baroque Chapel of Saint Evasius, which houses the saint’s relics, while a nearby museum of religious artworks offers further context to the region’s spiritual heritage.
