About

Funicolare di Castel San Pietro, also known as the Verona funicular, is a 180‑metre long incline lift that carries visitors up to the historic San Pietro Castle in Verona’s Veronetta district. The line originally opened in 1941 as a funicular railway to provide access to the castle, but after only three years of operation it closed when the tourist attraction failed to draw visitors. In the 2000s the municipal government decided to refurbish the abandoned line, converting it into a modern incline lift. The new service, which reopened in 2017, features a single cabin that can hold up to 25 people and climbs a vertical height of 55 metres (180 feet) on a 36 % slope. With two termini and an intermediate stop, the lift offers an easy, panoramic route for sightseeing, historic exploration, and a quick ascent to the castle’s gardens and towers.
