Museum of the Occupation of Latvia
About
The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia chronicles the 51‑year period when Latvia was successively occupied by the USSR, Nazi Germany and the USSR again, from 1940 to 1991. Established in 1993, the museum is housed in the historic Latvian Riflemen Square, with an additional branch in the former KGB headquarters. Visitors are taken on a moving journey through artifacts, documents and more than 2,300 intimate video testimonies that illuminate the personal impact of occupation. The permanent exhibition, opened in June 2022, offers a comprehensive narrative from the first Soviet occupation, through Nazi rule, to the re‑occupation by the Soviets, and culminates in Latvia’s regained independence. Guided tours in Latvian, English and German provide deeper context, with options for audioguides in many languages. The museum welcomes diverse audiences and offers free admission for children, students and repressed groups, encouraging an inclusive exploration of Latvia’s modern history.
