Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit
About
The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit is the most prominent Russian‑Orthodox place of worship in Vilnius, situated in the historic Old Town. Originally founded in 1638, the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1749 and 1753 by architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz, and later embellished with Neo‑Byzantine and Rococo elements in the 19th century. It serves as the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Lithuania and houses two monasteries—The Monastery of the Holy Spirit and the Monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene. Inside, the church boasts a magnificent iconostasis, a soaring dome, and a richly decorated interior that showcases the best of Vilnian Baroque and Rococo artistry. Visitors will also find a reliquary containing the remains of Saints Anthony, John, and Eustathios, a rare treasure linked to Lithuania’s Eastern Orthodox heritage. Beyond its architectural splendor, the church remains a living center of worship, hosting regular services, liturgical celebrations, and cultural events that attract both local faithful and international visitors alike.
