Boekie Woekie was founded in 1986 by a group of six artists in order to sell their own publications. Of those six, three are still running the store today; Rúna Thorkelsdóttir (Icelandic), Henriëtte van Egten (Dutch) and Jan Voss (German). Soon our store began expand and moved from its original shoebox room into larger quarters, now also selling works by other artists, self-published or small press editions. At our current location, we house some 7000 titles, many of which can rarely be found elsewhere. Apart from being a bookstore, we also functions as a gallery and occasionally house presentations, exhibitions and performances. Those who run it have continued their personal artists’ careers and count the shop itself as a sculpture in progress. You may also find us at several (international) art book fairs and exhibitions. The entirely self financing enterprise is Europe’s, if not the world’s, oldest venue for artists’ books which carries books regardless of their authors's fame.
