Erasmus Bridge
About
Erasmus Bridge, affectionately known as the "Swan", spans the Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam and is famed for its striking asymmetric pylon and sweeping cable‑stayed span. Completed in 1996, the 802‑metre long bridge (2,631 ft) blends functional roadway, tram tracks, cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways under a sleek steel and concrete deck. Its design, by Ben van Berkel, was inspired by the angular form of a harp and the dynamic motion of a flapping swan. The bridge is a constant icon in Rotterdam’s skyline, appearing in city signage, film, and annual celebratory events. Visitors can stroll across the bridge’s 33.8‑metre wide roadway, enjoy panoramic views of the harbor, and observe the mechanical bascule section that lifts for passing ships.
