Paul paints the wild, remote landscapes of the North Pennines, often through the Windows of its long abandoned cottages and barns. Following his recent move to Madeira, he is creating a series of landscape and Windows paintings of the island. 'My paintings are a response to the beautiful and often stark landscape of The North Pennines - from broad views of the moors and fells, to more intimate views glimpsed through windows in abandoned dwellings. The landscape is littered with the scars of mining and quarrying and I am producing paintings of places as they are slowly being reclaimed by nature. I am constantly amazed at the amount of abandoned dwellings that I keep finding and they are a rich source of inspiration to me,' Paul Stangroom Winner of the Royal Watercolour Society Award, 2009.
