Turnul Sfatului (The Tower of the Council)
About
The Tower of the Council (Turnul Sfatului) stands proudly in the historic center of Sibiu, linking the Old and New Towns through a slender passageway known as the gang. Originally built in the 13th century as a gate to the city’s second defensive wall, it has survived fire, war and neglect, only to be restored in recent decades. Visitors can walk up its winding spiral staircase to the upper floor, where an observation deck offers sweeping views of SXib’s medieval streets and the surrounding Făgăraș Mountains. Rich in architectural details—from Renaissance‑style lion statues on the southern flank to the vaulted chambers that once served as a grain depot, a prison, or a small museum—the tower also occasionally hosts exhibitions of medieval artifacts. A short, easily accessible walk for the whole family, the tower invites history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and casual tourists alike to delve into the city’s past and enjoy a panoramic snapshot of one of Romania’s famed Transylvanian cities. Admission is modest, only 2 RON per visitor, making it a budget friendly stop on any Sibiu itinerary.
