Town Hall (Magistrat)
About
Ljubljana Town Hall, also known as the Rotovž, stands proudly in the heart of the city, on Town Square near the magnificent Ljubljana Cathedral. The original structure was erected in 1484 in a modest Gothic style, and between 1717 and 1719 it was transformed into a stunning Baroque masterpiece under the direction of Gregor Maček, Sr., incorporating Venetian influences and a grand three‑part staircase. Today the building is not only the administrative seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana but also a celebrated architectural landmark that attracts both locals and international visitors. Its well‑preserved façade, the elegant loggia, and the replica of Francesco Robba’s famous Baroque fountain create an atmospheric backdrop for urban life and ceremonial gatherings. The Town Hall is accessible to the public free of charge, and visitors may explore its historic arches, steps, and public square for an immersive taste of Ljubljana’s civic heritage.
