Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro
About
The Basilica of Saint Mary of Coro (Basque: Koruko Andre Mariaren basilika, Spanish: Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Coro) is a striking Baroque Roman Catholic parish church that earned the status of minor basilica in the late 19th century. Completed in 1774, it sits proudly in the Old Town (Parte Vieja) of San Sebastián, a UNESCO‑listed city known for its art, cuisine, and vibrant cultural life. The church’s austere façade, crowned with a statue of Saint Sebastian, opens onto a vast nave that stretches 48 x 33 metres, featuring a monumental dome and a richly decorated interior with gilt statues, stained‑glass windows, and a solemn altar. With its sweeping arches and ornate sculptural details, the basilica is a testament to 18th‑century Spanish Baroque architecture and remains a beloved spiritual and historical landmark for both locals and visitors alike.
