About

The Cathedral of Granada (Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación de Granada) stands in the historic heart of the city on Plaza de la Pasiegas, 18001. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, it was conceived on the site of an Almoravid mosque and completed in the early 17th century under the direction of Diego de Siloe and other prominent architects. Visitors are welcomed into a richly ornamented basilical nave that showcases an eclectic blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. The interior is highlighted by the magnificent Capilla Mayor, the grand Rotunda, the awe‑inspiring alabaster altarpiece, and the celebrated Medallions of the Virgin Mary that pay tribute to the Catholic faith. The cathedral also boasts an impressive collection of frescos, tapestries, and carved stone portals, including the striking Gothic entrance portal of the Capilla Real. Its vaulted ceilings are studded with elaborately carved ribs, while the cathedral’s art and liturgical furnishings reflect a deep history of ecclesiastical patronage and artistic devotion. Open to visitors at any time, the cathedral also offers guided tours and special group reservations for schools and cultural groups. Guided pilgrimages are available and recommended during peak visitation periods to enhance the visitor experience without loss of time. The Cathedral remains not only a spiritual centre, but also an enduring architectural treasure that exemplifies Granada’s rich artistic heritage.
