Le Train De La Rhune
About
The Train de la Rhune is a historic metre‑gauge rack railway that carries visitors up 905 m to the summit of La Rhune, the most iconic mountain of the Basque Country. With its 35‑minute climb, a 1 h 20 min pause at the summit station, and another 35 minute descent, the full excursion lasts roughly two and a half hours, offering panoramic vistas of the Pyrenees, the Atlantic coast and the lush Basque countryside. The line opened in 1924 and still operates with three‑phase electric power, making it one of the few railways in the world to use this legacy technology. Guests can wander the summit terrace, visit the historic Udako Etxea restaurant, and explore river terraces teeming with wildlife. For visitors with mobility constraints, ramps and guided assistance are available. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover or simply looking for a memorable day trip, the Train de la Rhune delivers a charming blend of heritage and landscape.
