The Caves of Sare
About
The Caves of Sare, a spectacular natural and cultural heritage site in the French Basque Country, offers visitors an immersive journey into millions of years of geology, prehistory, and Basque mythology. A guided audio‑visual tour of the Lezea cave lasts about 45 minutes, taking guests through dramatic rock formations and evidence of early human habitation. After the tour, guests can freely explore the on‑site museum and the megalithic park, which recreates ancient funeral rites in an open‑air setting. The entire complex is accessible to people with reduced mobility, and a modern bar and picnic area provide a comfortable break. From late October to early March, the grounds are also open to the public for free between 10 am and 5 pm, extending the experience beyond the guided tour. The caves remain open daily (except for the Christmas holidays) until early January 2026, with operating hours of 2 pm to 5 pm on weekdays and 1 pm to 5 pm on weekends. Reservations are required due to limited capacity, and booking is strongly recommended during peak travel periods.
