Yacimiento Arqueologico Gadir
About
The Yacimiento Arqueológico Gadir is one of the oldest Phoenician sites in the western Mediterranean. Founded in the early first millennia BC, the ancient city of Gadir – later known as Cadiz – offers a unique glimpse into the maritime and commercial life of the Phoenicians. Archaeological excavations have uncovered rare architectural remains that provide a rare insight into the daily life, dwellings, streets, and markets of this once thriving colony. The site sits atop the ancient island of Erytheia, and its strategic position made it a key port for the Phoenician maritime empire. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, learn about the culture that once flourished there, and see how the Roman occupation later layers added to its rich history.
