Welcome to the pearlfishers at Cala dor Marina, a beautiful spot on the magnificent island of Mallorca in the middle of the Mediterranean. Mallorca has a long tradition of fishing over the years and here at the pearlfishers we celebrate the ancient art of pearlfishing tat goes back centuries and often performed by women in particular. Made famous in bizets opera the pearlfishers we learned of the passions of these island ladies from mysterious eastern islands but for almost 2000 years along the Japanese peninsula women have established an extraordinary livelihood diving deep into the pacific ocean for abalone, oysters, pearls and other shellfish.Utilizing special techniques that allow them to dive to depths of up to 30 metres these AMA divers were better suited to the colder waters due to the extra layer of fat they have in their bodies. Even today this tradition still lives on in Japan and is praised for its sustainability of only taking what you need.
