About

Fortaleza de la Mota, perched at 1,033 metres above sea level in Alcala la Real, is a monumental fortress that blends military, Islamic, and Christian architectural elements within one of the most dramatic hilltop settings in Andalusia. Dating back to the 13th–14th centuries, it was a strategic frontier outpost between the kingdoms of Castile and Granada, and its walls, towers, and gatehouses preserve the story of a city that once claimed the entire Andalusian frontier. Today, visitors can walk through the three main towers—El homenaje, La llama, and La Mocha—each offering panoramic views and deep insights into medieval life. Inside the enclosure, interactive exhibits and curated displays illustrate the daily rhythm of a fortified town, its religious, administrative, and commercial functions, and the complex network of watchtowers that protected the region. The fortress is open year‑round, with operating hours of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the winter season (mid‑September to mid‑April) and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the summer season (mid‑April to mid‑September). Special days such as Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and the first day of the new year open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The site is closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and the Feast of Epiphany. A small entrance fee of 8 € applies to all visitors, making it one of the most accessible historical sites in the region. The fortress offers a rich experience for history enthusiasts, families, and solo travelers alike, revealing the layered past of the Iberian Peninsula.
