About
The Tarragona Amphitheatre, situated in the Parc de l'Amfiteatre romà, is the remains of a Roman arena that once hosted gladiatorial contests and animal hunts. Built in the 2nd century AD, the amphitheatre measured about 130 by 102 metres and could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators. Over the centuries the ruins were reused for a basilica and later a prison, and today they form part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the ancient stones, stroll along the oval footprint, and learn about the rich history of the Roman colony of Tarraco through on‑site informational panels and guided tours.
