Circ Roma
About
Circ Roma is the highlight of Tarragona’s ancient heritage, a grand Roman amphitheatre that once hosted thrilling chariot races and spectacles in the 1st century AD. Conceived during the reign of Domitian, the monumental structure stretches over 325 m in length and 100–115 m in width, built atop vaulted foundations that served both structural and circulation purposes. After centuries of use, the arena fell into disuse in the 5th century, yet its stonework has been preserved remarkably well, offering a tangible glimpse into the daily life of rural Tarragona. Beyond the amphitheatre, visitors can explore the Aqueduct of Ferreres, which supplied water to the city, the well-preserved Casa Canals, and the neighbouring Forum Provincial. Together, these sites form a comprehensive mosaic of the civic and social history of ancient Tarragona, showcasing Roman architectural ingenuity and the communal spirit of the time. A visit to Circ Roma is not only a walk through stone but an immersive journey into the past, allowing travelers to stand in the same arenas where Romans once cheered for their heroes. The site’s accessibility, lined by clear signage and guided tours, ensures that both locals and international tourists can appreciate the aesthetic and historical significance of this iconic monument.
