Cueva El Soplao
About
Cueva El Soplao, situated in the Sierra de Arnero of Cantabria, is renowned for its extraordinary speleothems, including helictites, draperies, and an unusual array of stalactites and stalagmites that defy gravity and create a striking play of light and shadow. The cave complex stretches over 17 km of ancient tunnel systems, of which around 6 km are open to visitors through a guided tour that showcases the diverse mineral formations and the geological history of the region. A short introductory walk leads to the most accessible galleries, where visitors can witness the famed helictite “mushroom” formations that appear to grow in all directions. The main attraction is the series of exposed passages that run for approximately 1.5 km, offering spectacular panoramas of the surrounding pine‑covered slopes and the coast of Asturias. Along the route, interpretive panels explain the cave’s mining heritage—once lauded for its blende and galena deposits—and its transformation into a speleological monument. The visitor centre provides comfortable facilities, including a small café, a shop selling local craft, and a multimedia exhibit detailing the cave’s creation during the Cretaceous period. Guided tours are available in both Spanish and English, and visitors are encouraged to explore the network of trails and drop‑offs that extend beyond the tour path, allowing for longer, self‑guided explorations for those who wish to delve deeper into the subterranean landscape of the Sierra de Arnero.
