Monumento a los Heroes del 2 de Mayo
About
A few meters from the most visited monument of Segovia, the Alcazar, is an extraordinary work of art that goes virtually unnoticed. We are referring to the Monument to the "Dos de Mayo", located in the landscaped space in front of the entrance to the Alcazar, in the Plaza de la Reina Victoria Eugenia. To commemorate the centenary of the Second of May 1808, the government of Alfonso XIII wanted to erect a monument to commemorate the resistance of the people of Madrid against the French aggression. The project presented by the sculptor Aniceto Marinas was selected, and for its installation the esplanade of the Alcazar of Segovia was chosen, where the Artillery School was located, where Daoíz and Velarde, two of the main protagonists of those events, were trained. The work, begun in May 1908, took two years to complete, and King Alfonso XIII and the President of the Government, José Canalejas, attended its inauguration, which took place with great solemnity on July 15, 1910.
