About

The Cathedral of Primada in Toledo is a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture, built between 1226 and 1493 under the patronage of Archbishops Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada and Pedro González de Mendoza. Its five soaring naves, 88 columns, and 72 ribbed vaults showcase the influence of French Gothic while incorporating local Andalusian style. Dominating the interior is the magnificent illuminated altarpiece of the Transparate, created by Narciso Tomé and Roberto de R. e Fusco, and the towering 92‑metre Great Dome that crowns the cathedral’s central tower. Inside, visitors are drawn to the unique Mozarabic Chapel, the sole purpose‑built chapel for the Hispano‑Mozarabic rite, as well as the ornately carved Portal of the Clock, the Portal of the Lions, and the Portal of the Fire. The cathedral’s treasures include the revered Great Monstrance of Arfe and the Chapel of the Treasure containing silver, gold, and stained‑glass masterpieces. Free entrance is available every weekday from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. through the Door of the Clock, allowing a quiet, self‑guided stroll through the nave and its historic relics. Guided tours and guided interior visits are also offered during regular hours (10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday to Sunday 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and can be booked online via the official ticketing portal. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a faith‑based pilgrim, or a curious traveler, the Cathedral of Primada offers an unforgettable experience of Spain’s architectural and spiritual legacy, set against the dramatic backdrop of Toledo’s medieval skyline.
