Museo del Jurasico de Asturias
About
The UNESCO‑listed Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA) sits atop the Rasa de San Telmo hill in the coastal municipality of Colunga, offering panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea. Designed by architect Rufino Uribelarrea, the building mimics a gigantic tridactyl dinosaur footprint, its roof covered in copper that acquires a green patina over time. Inside, a sprawling 2,500‑square‑meter atrium hosts towering life‑size casts, including a 12‑metre T. rex, inviting visitors to marvel at the sheer scale of these prehistoric giants. MUJA’s collection spans 3,500 million years of life, from the pre‑Precambrian sea‑slicks to the end of the Cretaceous. Visitors roam through dedicated halls for the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, each curated with fossils, footprints, illustrations, and interactive displays. Highlights include the Jurassic Hall’s impressive sauropods, the Triassic Hall’s early dinosaur evolution, and the Cretaceous Hall’s evidence of the asteroid strike that reshaped life on Earth. Beyond its permanent displays, the museum offers educational workshops for children aged 4–11, encouraging hands‑on learning about palaeontology and the life‑acknowledgements of our planet. A temporary exhibition space hosts rotating shows on local topics such as the “Coast of Dinosaurs,” further enriching the visitor experience.
