Munot
About
The Munot is a 15th‑century fortified hilltop in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, that has stood for more than 400 years as an emblem of the city and the Rhine. Open year‑round, its visiting hours adjust to the seasons—8:00–20:00 from May to September and 9:00–17:00 from October to April. Visitors enjoy sweeping panoramic views of Schaffhausen and the Rhine, a walk along the ribbed ramparts, and a glimpse of medieval stonework in the interior. The independent Munotverein, founded in 1839, stewardly maintains the fortress and offers a vibrant program of cultural events, including ball dances, a traditional quadrille, open‑air cinema, and family‑friendly festivals. Membership grants free entry to many of these events, while non‑members can freely explore the fortress grounds on the listed hours. The site blends historical authenticity with contemporary cultural life, making it a must‑visit for history buffs, families, and culture enthusiasts alike.
