Gornergrat
About
The Gornergrat Railway is one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain railways, carrying visitors from the car‑free village of Zermatt to the 3,089 m summit ridge in just 25 minutes. Since 1898 it has been the world’s first electric cog‑wheel railway, offering uninterrupted views of the Matterhorn, Weisshorn, and a panorama of peaks over 4,000 m. At the summit station, the historic Kulm Hotel hosts the Gornergrat Observatory, where astronomy enthusiasts can explore a 600 mm telescope against a backdrop of starlit skies. Ride for half‑price with the popular Afternoon Ticket, valid from 12:15 pm and available online or at the station. Priority Boarding upgrades cost CHF 7 per adult (free for children up to six) and give early access to the best seat on the right‑hand side for the optimal Matterhorn view. For families and adventure seekers, the railway offers winter passes, snowshoeing, and sledging. The station and surrounding viewpoints are free to explore, making the Gornergrat a must‑visit for families, skiers, nature lovers, and astronomy enthusiasts. Tickets are sold via the Gornergrat web shop, SBB Mobile, or the station service counter. A standard adult fare is CHF 96, but the afternoon offer brings it down to CHF 74. Half‑fare, Swiss Travel Passes, and group discounts are also available. The railway operates every day of the year, with regular trains from 8 am to 6 pm (weekdays) and 8 am to 2 pm on weekends and public holidays.
