Bachelors' Club
About
The building we know today as the Bachelors’ Club is a 17th century thatched stone building in the village of Tarbolton, South Ayrshire. We call it the Bachelors’ Club because of the social and debating club founded by Robert Burns and his friends that would meet here monthly in the upstairs function space. Thatch was the common building material for roofs and was naturally renewable and a lightweight insulator. The Bachelors’ Club is one of approximately 200 thatched buildings remaining in Scotland. Thatch roofs can last several decades but eventually need to be replaced. To continue to preserve the character and integrity of the Bachelors’ Club we will shortly begin a phased project that begins with rethatching the roof. This does however mean that the Bachelor’s Club with be closed to the Public for the rest of the season.
