Berwick-upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard
About
Berwick‑upon‑Tweed Barracks and Main Guard is a striking 18th‑century military complex designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, now home to the Main Guard Museum and a collection of interactive exhibitions. Located on Palace Street in the historic market town, the museum offers free entry (accepting donations) and welcomes visitors daily from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm – closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In addition to the Main Guard, the site hosts the Maltings Cinema, artist studios and the King’s Own Scottish Borderers museum (currently closed). Visitors can explore the “By Beat of Drum” exhibition that traces the life of a British infantryman from the Civil War to the First World War, and the surrounding historic barracks precinct is open to the public with occasional events. The free admission makes it an ideal stop for history enthusiasts, families and solo travelers looking to experience Britain’s border heritage without a cost.
