About

Newport Wetlands is a National nature reserve situated in the south‑east of Newport, South Wales. Covering 437 hectares (1,080 acres) of the Caldicot Level, the reserve offers a mosaic of habitats that support a wide variety of wildlife—including breeding birds such as lapwing, redshank, oystercatcher and little ringed plover, as well as rare species like bittern and avocet. The visitor and education centre on West Nash Road opens daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and provides a shop, refreshments, bathroom facilities, viewing platforms and guided tours. Outside the centre a six‑kilometre circular walking and cycling path takes visitors past the East Usk Lighthouse, lagoons, a floating walkway and bird hides that overlook the Severn Estuary. Entrance to the reserve is free, and car parking is available every day of the year. Newport Wetlands offers an accessible, family‑friendly experience that combines natural beauty, wildlife spotting and educational outreach for visitors of all ages.
