The Helicopter Museum
About
The Helicopter Museum in Weston-super-Mare is the world’s largest dedicated rotorcraft collection, with more than 80 helicopters on display in a historic hangar. Visitors can see iconic aircraft such as the Queen’s Royal Flight helicopters, the world‑speed‑record holder G‑LYNX, a Vietnam veteran Huey, a Russian Hind gunship and a Belgian Antarctic research Bell 47H. The museum also features a large Westland Lynx that still holds the helicopter speed record, and the Weston Aviation Exhibition in the restored pilots block tells the story of the town’s wartime aviation history. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible and offers a café, gift shop, and a children’s play area. Live “Open Cockpit” days are held regularly, giving families the chance to climb into real aircraft and learn from experienced guides. Each exhibit is accompanied by informative panels and interactive displays, making it an engaging experience for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, families and school groups alike. The collection covers both civilian and military helicopters from the early days of rotary‑wing aviation to modern air‑transport aircraft.
