Beth Chatto's Plants & Gardens
About
Beth Chatto's Plants & Gardens is an award‑winning showcase of ecological horticulture set across 7.5 acres in the village of Elmstead Market, just east of Colchester. Founded in the 1960s by visionary gardener Beth Chatto, the gardens embody her principle of "right plant, right place"—each space is tailored to thrive in its own micro‑environment, from the tranquil Water Garden and Gravel Garden to the shady Woodland and vivid Scree Garden. Visitors can wander freely through the themed areas, explore a thriving plant nursery that produces over 100,000 plants annually, and enjoy the on‑site tearoom and gift shop stocked with botanical gifts and locally sourced treats. With seasonal events, guided walks, and workshops for all ages, the gardens offer a living laboratory for both casual visitors and gardening enthusiasts. The grounds remain a popular family-friendly destination, drawing nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike who appreciate the thoughtful landscaping and educational displays. Visitors can also explore the nursery’s growing commercial plants and learn about sustainable propagation techniques. Each visit typically lasts about three to four hours, giving ample time to explore the various gardens, learn about ecological plantings, and enjoy the peaceful ambience provided by Beth Chatto’s design. The gardens are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with reduced hours from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm during certain winter periods. Email: info@bethchatto.co.uk
